Make sure you get in on this action.

Pause/Pray/Pursue

Hey Terranova Family,

This week is about taking time out of our schedule to Pause/Pray/Pursue

Pause: stop what your doing whether its watching TV, surfing the web, hanging with friends or doing homework. Stop your normal routine and just be. This hectic pace will wear us all out. Stop and gather your thoughts and listen to the Spirit..

Pray: Once you've carved out some time do as Jesus did: Connect with the Father. Listen to him and draw near to him. Let him guide you instead of your schedule guiding you.

Pursue: He'll put someone on your heart once you are full of his grace and love. The pursue part becomes a natural outflow of spending time with the Lord as he flows out of you and onto other people. See what God is doing in the lives around you as you pour out what comes naturally through the Father.

NEXT WEEK: Thursday the 24th is NOOMA night at the HUB. Make sure to be there for great fun and discussion.

What do I desire?

Why Crazy?

The soul is who you are. It is your very essence.
Not your body, because you’ll lose that.
Not your mind, because you’ll lose that 2.

Your soul is the core of who you are.

Your soul is alive!! It living and needs nourishment, care and love. It requires nurture through an authentic connection with God. Through that nurturing connection, our souls receive rest, healing, strength and power for transformation.

We are being surrounded by crazy distractions. Things crawling for our attention. Things spinning out of control that are screaming at us to pay attention to it. What kind of things are on your mind?

(parents losing jobs, trying find summer jobs, out of control friends or siblings, sense of loss, tempting decisions, loss of faith, numbness and ways to numb the numbness)

We are bombarded with so many crazy things and we don’t have control over any of it. The control we do have is not on the external, but the internal. How are you taking care of your soul? How do those connections with God happen? That is what this summer is all about. Getting back to the root of who you are in this crazy world - your soul.

God has given us a way of life that he modeled through Jesus. Crazy stuff was going on with Jesus and yet his soul was so filled up by the father that he was at peace. His soul was rich and in the end that is what we are longing for - completeness. Filled up (not hollow).

Isaiah promises this: IS 40:28-31

Do you not know?
Have you not heard?
The LORD is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary,
and his understanding no one can fathom.

29 He gives strength to the weary
and increases the power of the weak.

30 Even youths grow tired and weary,
and young men stumble and fall;

31 but those who hope in the LORD
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.

Your soul is either healthy or neglected.

So I leave you with this: What is your soul crying out for?
“Once we clearly acknowledge the soul, we can learn to hear its cries.” - Dallas Willard, Renovation of the Heart.

Last Weeks Thoughts on Sexuality

SCHOLARS believe that the word SEX is related to the Latin word Secare which means “to sever, to amputate, to disconnect.”
Our sexuality then has 2 dimensions:
Our awareness of how cut off/ disconnected we are
Its about all the ways we go about trying to reconnect.

Remember: Our sexuality is all about the ways we strive to reconnect with our world, each other and God. ITS ABOUT CONNECTION!

You can’t be connected with God until you’re at peace with who you are. If you’re still upset that God gave you this body or this life or this family or these circumstances, you will never be ablt to connect with God in a healthy, thiving, sustainable sort of way. You’ll be at odds with your maker. And if you can’t come to terms with who you are and the life you’ve been given, you’ll never be able to accept others and how they were made and the lives the’ve been given. And until you’re at peace with God and those around you, you will continue to struggle with your role on the planet, your part to play in the ongoing creation of the universe. You will continue to struggle and resist and fail to connect. - Rob Bell, SEX GOD

SEX God

Tuesday, March 10, 2009

We all know that media talks to much about sex while families tend to shy away from it all. This is a call to parents to have continual discussions about sex and sexuality.

Not sure how many times this issue should be brought up? Well the more you talk about it the less you have to cover every time. Think of it like building blocks.

Still don't know how many times you should talk about it? - Then add up all the roles in the hay you have in a year and divide by three. If its more than you are comfortable with then divide by 5. Or throw that out because there is no formula! If you are a single parent then the answer should be ZERO, but alas you probably need to talk about the issue MORE than those living with both parents!

So what do you talk about? Well they already know the basics (hopefully) but our sexuality is complicated and confusing - which means we need to talk about it on an ongoing basis. So to help you I am suggesting everyone reads SEX God, by Rob Bell. The high school group is going to spend some time on some of the topics brought up by this book, but I'd like the parents to have the lead on the discussion. Know more and lead your students through the most sexually frustrating time of their lives.

You are their biggest advocate to remaining pure and dealing with their identity in the most healthy/God honoring ways.

Can I say it again - read the book! It just could make this whole subject less awkward.

The Experiment

Thursday, February 26, 2009

Are you ready for The Experiment??? (From the mind of Lyle Castellaw)

Hey there! How are you enjoying being a parent of a teenager? It’s a pretty wild ride, don’t you think? And especially tough is you and I helping our kids cultivate their relationship with God. Face it, most parents in our community will do all they can to help their kid become the honor student or the star athlete. But we see things a little bit different here at Terranova. It’s our desire for our kids to go beyond those objectives to be spiritually rich and whole, for their characters to be formed so that they live with a courageous faith, daring to seek purity in a world that scoffs at it. So how do we do that?

Here’s our simple discovery (Dana’s and mine): We’ve seen our teens benefit greatly by providing them a great spiritual diet. They are consistent in going to our youth group, but here’s what’s more: they have gotten into the rhythm of worshipping with us on Saturday nite.
Here’s our routine: we stop what we’re doing about 4pm and clean up so we can get to church by 5pm. We have a great time with the service, which tends to be more laid back, with round tables, candles, and acoustic style. Then we get dinner afterward.

So we’ve been thinking: why don’t more people like us do this, increasing the spiritual menu of the kids, because they still hit youth group and get good stuff there on Sunday morning?

Which leads us to The Experiment: what would it look like if every parent and teen combo showed up at the 5pm service on February 28 (this Saturday), with a potluck item in hand, dropping that item off in the youth room, then enjoying the service-- actually sitting together-- and then right afterward, having a potluck meal together and trying our skill at foosball, air hockey, pool, ping pong, or just chillin? What might happen? You’ll only know if you come!

I know this: your kids will not become strong in their faith by some sort of accident! We have great youth leaders who love our kids, led by Ryan Zeulner, who will be with us on that nite, by the way. And we also have a Saturday service, which we think works pretty well in giving them a time of spiritual feeding. Wanna try it? Just this once? We just want to see what happens, what God might do. We don’t have a big plan for doing things like this weekly or monthly. All we have is…an experiment!

To be a part, just email back and let us know you’re coming (jackie.j@ourterranova.com). And then, just show up bringing a potluck food item to share which can be dropped off at the youth room as you walk in. And then…we’ll see what happens! So….who’s playing?? Please reply back and let us know!

This all takes place on 2/28 at 5pm

Friday the 13th
